Present and Grounded: Understanding your story so you can turn up differently for your child

Project HoriZen is excited to host Clinical Psychologist Kara Choi for a webinar on Thursday 31 July, 1-2pm AEST.

Webinar Overview

Have you ever had a clear picture of the parent you want to be, and then watched yourself respond in a way that looked nothing like it?

You’re not alone – and you’re not broken. Many parents carry an invisible inheritance: the emotional patterns, unspoken rules, and lessons absorbed in a childhood where feelings weren’t always safe to have. Without realising it, these early experiences quietly shape the way we respond to our children today, often in the very moments that matter most.

This 60-minute webinar offers a warm, evidence-based introduction to understanding how your history shapes the way you parent – and what you can do about it. Blending attachment science, neuroscience, and practical tools, this session is designed to be accessible, compassionate, and immediately applicable to your everyday life.

By the end of this webinar, you will:

  • Understand what emotional availability is, and why it matters more than perfect parenting

  • Recognise the four attachment styles and how they develop in early childhood

  • Identify the unspoken emotional rules you inherited from your family of origin, and how these may be showing up in your parenting today

  • Understand the neuroscience of parenting triggers – why your body responds before your mind gets a chance, and what to do about it

  • Walk away with 5 practical tools you can begin using immediately

This webinar is for anyone who loves a child and wants to show up for them more fully – mothers, fathers, caregivers, and professionals including counsellors, social workers, and psychologists working with parents or families.
