“East meets West: Integrating Culture into Clinical Practice for Asian Heritage Populations”
Project HoriZen is pleased to invite you to join in on some culturally responsive practice at our workshop: “East meets West: Integrating Culture into Clinical Practice for Asian Heritage Populations”
Please note this is an ONLINE only workshop and is a revised version of the in-person workshops that ran in 2024. There will be some key differences due to it being online, which is why it is split into TWO parts. You are welcome to sign up for one or both events:
- Part 1 – Thursday 6 March 2025, 9.30am to 12.30pm AEDT (Sydney time)
- Part 2 – Thursday 20 March 2025, 9.30am to 12.30pm AEDT (Sydney time)
The event will be recorded and you will receive access to the course within two weeks of its completion. The recording will be accessible to you for 6 months.
What is the objective of the workshop?
The workshop is aimed at exploring the gaps between Western therapy principles and Eastern/Asian cultural values. While Western psychology has undoubtedly led to improvements in mental health, we recognise that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach. We will promote culturally responsive practice by understanding how unique cultural values, beliefs and experiences impact the therapeutic process.
What is covered in the workshop?
Part 1: Foundation, assessment and formulation
1) Overview of the literature to date on Asian mental health and the key challenges faced by clinicians working with Asian heritage clients (e.g. filial piety, emotional expression, gender)
2) Overview of cultural assessment tools
3) Current formulation theories that exist in the cultural psychology space
4) Introduction to my Cultural Flower Formulation
Part 2: Techniques and skills (schema therapy focused)
1) Overview of schemas and modes that typically present in Asian heritage clients
2) Practical skills on how to adapt psychotherapy techniques in a culturally sensitive manner for Asian heritage clients (imagery rescripting and chairwork)
3) Introduction of existing culturally-informed techniques
4) Troubleshooting key challenges clinicians may encounter in the therapy room when working with Asian heritage populations
Please note that part 2 will be interactive and we will be using breakout rooms so that you have the opportunity to practice some of the skills.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is designed for clinicians of ALL backgrounds who are currently working with or interested in working with clients of Asian Heritage. Whilst the workshop has a schema-focused approach and a general understanding of schemas is helpful it is open to anyone interested in working from an Asian cultural lens.
