We are pleased to announce the launch workshop – “East meets West: Integrating Culture into Clinical Practice for Asian Heritage Populations”

Friday 15th March 2024 in Sydney at Cliftons Margaret St

Thursday 27th June 2024 in Melbourne at Angliss Conference Centre

Friday 15th November 2024 in Punthill Apartment Hotel Spring Hill

What is the objective of the workshop?

The workshop is aimed at exploring the gaps between Western therapy principles and Eastern/Asian cultural values. While Western psychology has undoubtedly led to improvements in mental health, we recognise that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach. We will promote culturally responsive practice by understanding how unique cultural values, beliefs and experiences impact the therapeutic process.

We will:

  • Broadly discuss Asian heritage populations and the cultural perspectives on mental health with a particular focus on Southeast, East and South Asian populations.
  • Explore how to factor culture into clinical formulation
  • Explore the key challenges that clinicians may encounter in the therapy room when working with Asian heritage populations including discussions about topics such as filial piety, emotional expression, attachment, gender roles and expectations.
  • Discuss the types of schemas and modes that typically present in Asian clients
  • Explore practical skills on how to adapt psychotherapy techniques in a culturally sensitive manner for Asian clients
  • Provide a safe space for all clinicians to express and explore the challenges they have encountered in the therapy room when working with Asian clients

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed for clinicians of ALL backgrounds who are currently working with or interested in working with clients of Asian Heritage.

Whilst the workshop has a schema-focused approach and a general understanding of schemas is helpful it is open to anyone interested in working from an Asian cultural lens.

Importantly, this workshop is an opportunity for all to connect and openly discuss the challenges that you may encounter in the therapy room when working with Asian clients. We encourage the sharing of strategies that you may have adapted or developed for working with Asian clients. A key principle of Project HoriZen is ensuring information and knowledge is shared so that we can better promote the mental health of Asian communities and work towards destigmatisation.
