***This workshop has ended, stay tuned for 2025 training***
As a part of Rita Younan and Ruth Holt’s Schema Therapy from the “Inside Out” workshop,
I am pleased to invite you to join me in exploring the dialogue on how your own cultural experiences have shaped not only the schemas and modes that you may hold but also the way that you practice. There is no “set structure” as the purpose is to connect and engage with what you each individually feel comfortable sharing with the group, however, it may include exploration of:
- The socio-cultural challenges you may have experienced as a part of institutions, such as educational and occupational environments where you may have been the minority. Did this elicit a lot of compliant surrenderer mode for you stemming from a hierarchical cultural/family structure for instance?
- The internal conflict you may have felt when practising from an evidence-based framework (that comes from Western principles) that did not address what to do with cultural nuances. This may have led you to venture into the abyss of ‘figuring it out’ yourself. Did this trigger off your own Demanding Critic mode or Unrelenting Standards schema?
- Exploring the idea of what is ‘healthy’ in an Asian context by examining both collectivistic and individualistic views that impact how we practice with our clients and also the personal beliefs we hold. E.g. Is it enmeshment or just collectivism?
- The representation of Happy Child mode and how this tied into the messages you received growing up e.g. was this impacted by an inverted parent-child relationship if you grew up as a child of migrant parents?
- How intergenerational trauma impacts us as clinicians and the way that we work with our clients e.g. Did we inherit an emotional deprivation schema and how does this impact the way we rescript for our clients?
Importantly, sensitivity and empathy will be reflected in our discussions as part of culturally responsive practice. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.
